International Hospital Federation (IHF)

Competencies generally include as skills, knowledge, and aptitudes; consequently, the definition of competencies is associated with actions. Management and leadership focus on achieving results and a vision, respectively. Healthcare executives must possess expertise in management and leadership, and ensure that their leadership team and future leaders also have expertise in both areas. The competencies outlined in “Global Healthcare Leadership Competency Model” can be utilized for managerial and leadership purposes, depending on the specific use and context. To assess the level of command of these competencies, the current document adopts the Dreyfus model of skill acquisition, which is based on four criteria: contextual knowledge, recognition of relevance, analytical or holistic assessment of the context, and rational or intuitive decision-making. This model highlights the significance of practice for skill improvement
